Oklahoma is home to one of the largest concentrations of historic all-Black towns in the United States. These communities were founded by African Americans seeking freedom, independence, and opportunity after the Civil War.
More than 50 Black towns were established across Oklahoma in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Built by formerly enslaved people and their descendants, these towns became symbols of self-governance, economic strength, and cultural pride.
