Hidden among the rolling hills of Carter County in southern Oklahoma, the historic town of Tatums stands as one of the state\u2019s thirteen surviving All-Black towns. Founded during the final years of Indian Territory, Tatums became a place where African American families could build businesses, educate their children, own land, and establish a thriving community during a period when opportunities elsewhere were often limited.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The town traces its beginnings to 1895, when Lee Tatum and his wife, Mary Tatum, applied for a post office that would serve the growing rural settlement. Their home quickly became the center of the new community, housing not only the post office but also a small grocery store that supplied area residents with everyday necessities. Lee Tatum also served as a United States Deputy Marshal, making him an important leader in maintaining law and order throughout the region during Oklahoma\u2019s territorial days. Their vision and leadership helped lay the foundation for a community that would prosper for decades.<\/p>

Located just a few miles northeast of present-day Ratliff City, Tatums grew steadily as families settled nearby. Early residents quickly established institutions that remain hallmarks of successful communities\u2014a church, a school, and local businesses. Henry Taylor, one of the community\u2019s early citizens, owned the largest home in town and welcomed travelers by offering overnight lodging, demonstrating the hospitality that became part of Tatums\u2019 identity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As the population increased, so did economic opportunity. A hotel opened in 1899, followed by a blacksmith shop in 1900 that served local farmers and ranchers. By 1910, a cotton gin and sawmill were operating in town, creating jobs and supporting the area\u2019s agricultural economy. A motor garage was added in 1918 as automobiles became more common across Oklahoma. These businesses reflected a community that was adapting to changing times while providing essential services for residents and neighboring farms.<\/p>\n

The discovery of oil in the surrounding area during the 1920s brought a new era of prosperity. Several local landowners benefited from oil production on their property, allowing families to improve their homes, invest in education, and support community projects. While Tatums never became a major oil boomtown, petroleum development provided an economic boost that strengthened the community during an important period of its history.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Education was always one of Tatums\u2019 highest priorities. The community constructed its first stone school building in 1914, and as enrollment increased, a second story was added just a few years later. During the era of segregated education, Tatums received assistance from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, a nationally recognized program created to improve educational opportunities for African American children across the South. The Rosenwald-supported school became a source of pride for the community, helping generations of students receive quality education despite the challenges of segregation. Later improvements through New Deal programs further strengthened the school\u2019s role as the center of community life.<\/p>

Faith also played an essential role in Tatums\u2019 development. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, completed in 1919, became both a place of worship and a gathering place for the community. Today the historic church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains the oldest surviving public building in the town. Its preservation serves as a reminder of the determination and craftsmanship of Tatums\u2019 early residents, who built institutions designed to serve future generations.<\/p>

Tatums even found its way into early American filmmaking. In 1927, Norman Studios selected the town as a filming location for the silent motion picture Black Gold<\/em>, one of the few films of its era featuring African American actors in leading roles. Local Deputy Marshal L. B. Tatum appeared in the production, giving residents a rare opportunity to participate in the growing motion picture industry. Although no complete copy of the film is known to survive today, the screenplay and production materials have been preserved, making Black Gold<\/em> an important part of both Oklahoma and African American film history.<\/p>

Like many rural communities across America, Tatums faced significant challenges during the Great Depression. Agricultural markets weakened, employment opportunities declined, and many younger residents moved to larger cities in search of work. Population gradually decreased throughout the twentieth century, yet the town never disappeared. Instead, Tatums continued preserving its heritage while remaining one of the few surviving historic All-Black towns in Oklahoma.<\/p>

Today, visitors to Tatums discover more than a quiet rural community\u2014they find a place that represents resilience, determination, and the pursuit of opportunity. Historic landmarks, including Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, continue to tell the story of a town founded through faith, hard work, and community cooperation. The legacy of Lee and Mary Tatum lives on through the town that bears their name, reminding future generations of the important role Oklahoma\u2019s All-Black towns played in shaping the state\u2019s history.<\/p>

More than 125 years after its founding, Tatums remains a symbol of perseverance and pride. While its population is much smaller than during its peak years, its historical significance continues to grow as scholars, preservationists, and visitors recognize the remarkable story of one of America\u2019s unique communities.
